A Vision Takes Root
The Nativity on Monument Square began as a dream planted in Bob Wortock’s heart. It grew each time he wandered downtown Racine and remembered the magical Christmases of his childhood. Back then, the streets glowed with arching decorations. Store windows came alive with animated displays. Festive music filled the air.
People greeted one another with easy smiles and cheerful “Merry Christmas!” Families lingered together downtown, soaking in the sights, sounds, and scents of the season. On Christmas Eve, shops closed early so everyone could head to church.
Bob longed to bring back a piece of that warmth and wonder. And so he imagined a public expression of that spirit—a Nativity scene placed right in the heart of Racine. But first, he needed the City’s blessing.
First Display and Guiding Principles
Earning that approval took nearly two years. When it finally came, it allowed for a modest Nativity on the north side of Monument Square. Through the process, Bob and the City established clear guidelines for all future displays—principles that still ensure access for everyone.
The Nativity appears each year between St. Nicholas Day (December 6) and Orthodox Christmas (January 7). No matter the weather, Bob returned to the Square repeatedly. Often arriving late at night or before dawn, he shoveled snow and captured family photos. Visitors shared heartfelt memories and stories, and he listened with care and attention.
Bob’s Devotion and Community Impact
He held firmly to one belief: the organization should never be renamed or absorbed by any group seeking ownership. The Nativity belonged to the community—created for it, sustained by it, and carried forward entirely through the devotion of volunteers who shared Bob’s vision.
Today, that legacy continues. If Bob’s vision inspires you, we invite you to help keep the Monument Square Nativity shining for future generations. Whether you volunteer your time, share the story, or support the display in any way you can, your involvement keeps Racine’s Christmas spirit alive and glowing. Join us in honoring this tradition—be a part of what brings our community together each holiday season.
